Unity - GDS 108

This photo contains three of the six ways to create unity first is repetition, then proximity, and a little continuity. Repetition occurs when we use the same visual element more than once, clearly in this photo we see the repetitious use of stacking the slice starting from top to bottom. Repetition is also used with the shapes and color, each slice is approximately the same size, and then with the color you get a feel that different apples were used and yet the color remains red. Proximity is the distances between visual elements in a design, as you can see in the picture all of the slices are touching. This view that the apples are touching also allows for the viewer to notice that apple, although not in you physical hand, has weight. However with the weight when you move from the inside out viewers get a sense of tension because it seems as though the edges will topple over. Continuity is a fluid connection among compositional parts. I feel that this picture creates movement, almost seeming as if it is a spiral stair case starting from the bottom and working your way to the top. Finally as you move from the bottom to the top we find that the eye moves to what is the focal point, being the small round purple object that is perched on the top slice. Although you are able to understand what the slices create, that one purple object forces the viewers to think about its purpose, and the meaning of the entire peice.

  1. I think you did a great job deconstructing the themes of unity in this image. I really was immediately drawn up through the repetition of the slices to the purple object at the top. The striking color of the purple object also attracts the viewer's eye up there. After I finished looking at that I was wondering if there was a stick through that apple to make it stay in a tower or if its just the adhesion properties of the water inside the apple.

  2. I really like this piece of work. It is using the positive/negative spaces wonderfully. By this I mean that the white space is activated causing your eye to move in and around the apple slices. This gives the viewer an interesting playtime with the repetition and continuity of the image. Even though we see the repetition, it is the variation of that, that creates the interest in the piece. That variation keeps the viewer interested. It is still holding your attention by the column created in the center of the page because it's not perfectly straight, another variation but also a containment that gives believability to its solid mass. It's an important message that what ever that little pill is, it can handle what ever shape "you" come in. The use of the apple is also symbolic of health, the fruit of life, stable and will be around for a long time. This is also balanced by the white space by giving the viewer time to think about it, without filling it with unnecessary stuff around the space. By the space being balanced, it is unifying the space as a whole.
Now I can't tell what the add is about because the rest of the information is missing so I don't know if it is designed to react it's target market. I can assume that the little purple thing is the focal point because it is out of place and everything else has visually explained its self. So assuming it is health related, the rest of the design supports the idea. The shape of the design leads me to think a pattern has emerged as well. You can visually trace lines through it which further emphasizes the unity of the piece.

  3. I also like this piece. This does make me think about the concept of unity. To me, even though the apple was sliced, it was still together. That shows unity to me. I just think this is an awesome photo. Keep up the great work!

  4. You did a very good job in finding a picture that's has a lot of unity. In this image its easy to find the concepts of unity because it only has a few elements involved. Something that really got my attention was how the apple slices are arranged from top to bottom. This arrangement forms a pattern, and patterns for unity. I like how the apple slices are next to each other which makes me see and right tell me that its an apple. If the slices would of been far apart from each other it would of been hard telling what it was. The white background really stands out because it makes the image look attractive and clean. The purple marble on one of the slices makes me look at the apple from top to bottom, letting me see the entire design and structure of the sliced apple. Probably that round purple object is telling us that that an apple is well balanced in vitamins, because it holds steady. The apple is divided in to 8 pieces, which makes me think of the eight important elements that form an apple. That is (1)Vitamin C,(2)Folate,(3)Vitamin E,(4)Vitamin K,(5)Thiamin,(6)Riboflavin,(7)Vitamin B6,(8)vitamin A. I really liked this image a lot. I has a great meaning behind it and the reason why you understand that meaning is if you pay attention to every element that demonstrates unity. At the end you can sum up and combine every thing and see a great composition with out words. Theirs no need for words, a well creative and well design composition will interpreted itself. Great image,....and definitely shows how unity works in a creative composition. -Ivan-

  5. This is a very interesting peice of work. I really like how the slices were placed perfectly that if you look at it, it still kind of has the principles of a normal apple. The way the slices were grouped together still lets you see the apple when you look at the image. This is a really cool example of unity.

  6. I like the way that the bright colors of the apple and the marble appear even more striking against the white background. Similarly, I am also impressed by the way that the artist used the small amount of variation introduced by the marble to enhance an otherwise very unified design and color palette. A very good piece, overall.

  7. This is a great picture. IT has a lot of repetition but the addition of the purple ball and the contrast of the negative space make it very interesting. Excellent example of unity.

  8. This image is so amazing. I love how there is a big red apple taking up most of the composition but the focal point is a small purple marble. In many images the focal point is a big bright color but the artist somehow managed to leads the viewers eye to the marble. This is such a cool image.

  9. I like the use of the positive and negative space in composition nice use of unity. Repetition is prevalent, and proximity used well. If the slices were place farther apart, or closer together it would have lost the the movement throughout. Image is placed on a clean background which forces you to focus on the abstract portion of the piece making you think what it is doing there. I too feel it represents the elemental beakdown of the apple. Outstanding overall image.
